Linc Chafee enters the race for governor with a 5 page speech and yet for most who covered his announcement, he buried the lead
Bottom of page 2 – a two tiered sales tax. One rate for what’s taxed now and a 1% levy on 9 billion dollars in untaxed items including food and medication.
Don’t start hoarding bread and aspirin yet. Slipping that one past the General Assembly would be like sneaking a pork chop past the wolves at the state house door.
The candidate also says he wants to be a champion of the property taxpayer. So why not a trade off?
Collect 90 million with the new tax with everyone paying a little. (About a buck per every 100) Then, pass it down to municipalities with the order that they have to cut property taxes by “X” percent.
At the end of the exchange, maybe the state is even or up 10 million or so but the property taxpayer has more in their pocket to save and spend in our economy.
Chafee implied a connection between the two taxes but never balanced his proposed increase with that three letter word so many want to hear in his old and perhaps his new party; Cut.
Gov. Chafee eh? Politics in Providence are always a goodtime!
