Warrants offer more details on ‘Gablinski’ emails
The intrepid Tim White just obtained the search warrants that police used in the “Gablinski” case. They include some of the quotations I mentioned earlier, but they also offer an interesting tick-tock on how the situation played out.
Here’s what police say happened in the week and a half before Gablinske filed his complaint on Sept. 24:
Mr. Gablinske produced copies of emails that begin on September 10, 2010. The first email appeared to be from a constituent, walterflatus@gmail.com, to Mr. Gablinske’s State of RI email address rep-gablinske@rilin.state.ri.us inquiring about Mr. Gablinske’s vote on toll legislation for the Mt. Hope Bridge. Mr. Gablinske responded to the inquiry on September 13, 2010 clarifying his position on the legislation.
On September 14, 2010 Mr. Gablinske received an email from douggablinski@gmail.com with subject “Confusion?” with a message following, “Hee, hee, hee! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!” Mr. Gablinske reported that he has no such Gmail account and does not spell his name with an “i.” On September 15, 2010 Mr. Gablinske received a second email from walterflatus@gmail.com referencing a response from Representative Gablinske to walterflatus@gmail.com supporting a $5 per axel bridge toll. Mr. Gablinske stated that he never sent this response to walterflatus@gmail.com and has never supported a toll on the Mt. Hope Bridge.
On September 20, 2010 Mr. Gablinske received a message from walterflatus@gmail.com questioning Mr. Gablinske’s conflicting emails. The message contained an original message from douggablinski@gmail.com to walterflatus@gmail.com. Within this original message from douggablinski@gmail.com was the following message, “Dear Walter, I realize that increasing the tolls on the Mount Hope Bridge may have a negative impact on you, but I’m a STATE representative, Do you understand? STATE representative, not just the representative of the Mount Hope Bridge. I was elected to think about the bridges in Central Falls, too. Besides, you shouldn’t be using the bridge more than twice a day. You’r wasting bridge.” The message appeared to be an attempt to impersonate RI State Representative Gablinske. Mr. Gablinske emailed walterflatus@gmail.com in an attempt to notify that false information was being sent on his behalf.
On September 21, 2010 and September 22, 2010 Mr. Gablinske received a fifth and sixth email from walterflatus@gmail.com with original emails attached from dougglasgablinski@gmail.com to walterflatus@gmail.com. The original messages were framed to be an unprofessional and an apparent attempt to represent Mr. Gablinske. One of the original emails read, “Walter, Do you want to buy some trash bags? I’ve got $9,000 worth in my garage. Dougie.” Mr. Gablinske stated that the message was referencing a campaign advertising program he runs using his recycling bags.
So who is “Walter Flatus”? And how did “Gablinski” get in touch with him in the first place? Big of him to think about the bridges of Central Falls, though.
