Patrick Lynch’s campaign war chest biggest in RI

It looks like dropping out of the Democratic gubernatorial primary wasn’t such a bad move for former Attorney General Patrick Lynch.

Lynch ended last year with $347,340 in his campaign account and not a penny of debt, according to his latest finance report. That was more than any other leading Rhode Island politician, in or out of office, according to a WPRI.com survey of R.I. Board of Elections records.

The only person who came close to Lynch was his fellow Democrat, General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, a newcomer who is already proving to be a prolific fundraiser. She had $310,488 in her account and was also debt-free as of Dec. 31.

At the other end of the spectrum, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin had $562 (and $26,430 in debt), while Secretary of State Ralph Mollis had just $146 but no debt. Moderate Party founder Ken Block was left with exactly 3 cents.

Interestingly, one of the state’s biggest campaign war chests belongs to former state Rep. George Caruolo, who left office in 1998 after serving as House Majority Leader and penning the famous act that bears his name. Caruolo still has $127,090 in cash – only about $2,000 less than Speaker Gordon Fox.

Here’s how much cash was in the campaign accounts of two dozen leading Rhode Island politicians as of Dec. 31, 2010:

  • Patrick Lynch $347,340.92
  • Gina Raimondo $310,488.62
  • Gordon Fox $129,081.37
  • George Caruolo $127,090.80

  • M. Teresa Paiva Weed $5,609.78
  • Dominick Ruggerio $4,268.41
  • John Robitaille $3,193.31
