WPRO shaking up schedule with new morning host

Talk radio station WPRO-AM 630 is shaking up its weekday schedule with a new morning host and different time slots for its familiar voices, WPRI.com has confirmed.

Starting soon, John DePetro, who’s currently on air from 6 to 10 a.m., will be heard from 9 a.m. to noon. DePetro is making the switch partly to give himself time to try and launch a new, nationally syndicated weekend program, according to WPRO.

The station has not said what will happen to its other hosts, but Dan Yorke, Buddy Cianci and Matt Allen are all expected to keep their current jobs once the scheduling shift is complete.

Some of the changes are expected to be announced by WPRO executives today. The start date for the new schedule has not been formalized. (Rumors about the changes were reported earlier by GoLocalProv.)

But today’s initial announcement leaves open a key time slot for WPRO: the 6 to 9 a.m. morning drive time slot when the first three hours of DePetro’s program are currently on air.

In a statement, WPRO Program Director Paul Giammarco said only that the station plans “to recast The WPRO Morning News” to provide “objective news reporting.” He also confirmed the station will be adding a fifth local host in the morning but did not say who it would be.

Multiple sources say WLNE-TV ABC 6 anchor Andrew Gobeil is in advanced talks to host a new morning rush-hour program on WPRO that will air from 6 to 9 a.m. But that deal has not been finalized.

Gobeil, who joined ABC 6 in October 2009, confirmed that he’s leaving WLNE – which is in receivership and set to be sold within weeks – but was coy when asked whether he was doing so to join WPRO.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss where I’ll be in the weeks ahead, but I am absolutely thrilled at what the future holds,” Gobeil told me.

Is DePetro that great that they’ll shuffle the whole staff to accomodate him? He’s the only host I don’t enjoy listening to.
