AP: No Purple Heart, no Gulf War service on Gordon’s recordSeptember 23rd, 2011 at 11:41 am by Ted Nesi under Nesi's Notes
The Associated Press’ David Klepper has a new scoop on the evolving story of embattled state Rep. Daniel Gordon:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Military service records for a Rhode Island lawmaker who has said he sustained combat injuries in the 1991 Gulf War do not list a Purple Heart award or any Middle East deployments.
State Rep. Daniel Gordon’s Marine Corps records, obtained by The Associated Press, list him as an aircraft technician who served from 1987 to 1991 in the U.S. and Japan. Gordon has said his leg was injured by shrapnel outside Baghdad.
Gordon did not respond directly to the substance of the AP’s story on Twitter, but he did tweet: “I’m fair game being a public official, but calling family from out of state for a comment is over the line, Dave Klepper.”
Separately, Gordon apparently joined the Libertarian Party of Rhode Island on Friday, giving the tiny organization its first state lawmaker.
Update: “Three words,” Gordon tweets again. “Yellow dog journalism. Payback for me being upset that Klepper called my family from out of state for ‘comment’.” But he has yet to address the substance of the Associated Press story.
Update #2: WPRI.com has just obtained Gordon’s records from the U.S. Marine Corps, and the AP’s story checks out.
