Farrelly brother to headline Doherty fundraiser in Lincoln
Brendan Doherty is calling in some Hollywood star power to boost his congressional campaign.
Writer-director Bobby Farrelly will return to his home state to headline a fundraiser for the Republican 1st District candidate and former state police colonel on Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Trattoria Romana Bar & Grill in Lincoln, WPRI.com has learned.
Farrelly and his brother Peter – the moviemakers behind comedies like “There’s Something About Mary” and “Dumb and Dumber” – grew up in Cumberland, where Doherty lives, and are family friends of his.
An invitation says seating at the Farrelly event will be “very limited,” with only the first 70 people who RSVP admitted. The cost to attend is $500 (the “Friend” level) or $2,500 (the “Colonel’s Club” level).
The event is being managed by GOP operative Darcie Johnston of Johnston Consulting, the Burlington, Vt.-based firm that’s leading Doherty’s fundraising efforts. Doherty has raised about $385,000 since launching his campaign in May.
Unlike his brother, Bobby Farrelly doesn’t appear to be too active in politics. His only recorded donation to a federal candidate is a 2002 contribution of $2,000 to the unsuccessful U.S. House campaign of Democrat Mark Kennedy Shriver, son of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver and nephew of John, Bobby and Ted Kennedy.
Peter Farrelly, on the other hand, has donated more than $50,000 to Democrats at the federal level since 2001. That includes a $2,100 contribution to former R.I. Secretary of State Matt Brown’s aborted U.S. Senate campaign in 2006. Peter has also given money to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Kerry, Wesley Clark and Al Franken.
Doherty isn’t alone in planning big fundraisers for October. Rhode Island Democrats are planning a show of force at a barbecue for Congressman David Cicilline this weekend. Loughlin’s campaign doesn’t have any fundraisers planned but is sending out a direct-mail appeal for contributions, a spokesman said.

One Obama voter comes in to fund raise for another! Nuff Said
And Reagan voted republican his whole adult life?
Doherty has voted as a Democrat for years. In fact he has donated to Patrick Lynch in both elections and never once has donated to a Republican. Of course when you have mostly democrats on your team, and most of your money is coming from them, it becomes very obvious that Doherty has made mistakes and surrounded himself with the wrong people. Toss in Gio Cicione, the former chair and you hit the trifecta. Yes the former chairman who worked his but off to bend over for Frank Caprio and put a knife in the back of his own candidates running for Governor and Congress. Sorry, most all Republican the party just isn’t buying it!
