PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Congressman David Cicilline raised about $202,000 for his reelection bid during the third quarter, WPRI.com has confirmed.

The Democrat’s approximate total for contributions from July 1 to Sept. 30 was confirmed by his campaign spokeswoman Nicole Kayner. She said a cash-on-hand number was not available yet.

Cicilline’s fundraising continued to outpace that of his leading Republican opponent, former State Police Col. Brendan Doherty, who raised more than $130,000 in the third quarter. Former State Rep. John Loughlin’s campaign raised $23,377.

“This report is proof of the strong support for David as he fights for jobs in Washington,” Kayner said in a statement. “Rhode Islanders are rallying around David so that he can continue to push back against [Republicans'] dangerous policies in Congress.”

Kayner also said Cicilline raised $8,025 last weekend at a major event billed as his “First Annual Family Barbecue” that attracted 222 people, many from the state’s Democratic establishment, including U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse. That money will be counted as part of his fourth-quarter total.

“It definitely exceeded our expectations,” Kayner said. “It’s the first time that we’ve done one of these barbecues, and we had a lot of new faces, which was nice to see.” She noted it was being held at the same time as a Patriots game and a Columbus Day parade.

Republicans argue Doherty is doing an impressive job considering he is a first-time candidate and Cicilline has the power of incumbency in his favor. Loughlin’s campaign emphasizes he has not formally announced his candidacy yet while he finishes a tour of duty in Iraq.

As of June 30, the three candidates’ cash on hand totaled $361,748 for Cicilline, $270,233 for Doherty and $302 for Loughlin, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

Candidates are required to file their third-quarter reports with the FEC by Saturday.
