One of the sensors we use on weather satellites can measure the amount of water vapor within the depths of the atmosphere. This enables us to better understand storms and the ability for them to produce a little, or a lot of precipitation. The water vapor image below shows many shades of gray and white across the Mid Atlantic, indicating high amounts of vapor.
