Rain Check..

It’s no secret…we’ve had a lot of rain in recent days.  We finished May with above normal precip after seeing many months with below normal precipitation.  We needed more rain and we got it!  Since January 1st, however, we are still more than 5″ below normal.

After the last Rhode Island Drought Steering Committee’s meeting in early May, we were technically in a drought.

Then, cue the May and June rains!

The next Drought Steering Committe meeting is June 12th.  For the determination of whether we are still in a drought, they look at things like streamflow, reservoir levels, water tables, well water, soil moisture and recent rainfall.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, all of Rhode Island is out of the drought, except for extreme northwest Rhode Island.

We will keep you posted as to the Drought Steering Committe decides this week!

I’m thinking we are in the clear as far as statewide droughts go.
