No Saturday Morning Post this weekend
Alas, illness has hobbled your humble columnist and I wasn’t able to crank out my usual weekend missive. So how about we turn the tables – what did you think about this week’s events in politics and business? Leave your take in the comments section below.
And remember, comments on Nesi’s Notes are registration-free; if you’ve never left one before, try it out. Oh, and if you’ve got a cold remedy, leave that too.
Feel better soon, Ted! Advil Cold & Sinus is great!
We are no longer in state , driven away but all the topics well covered here so let me report from afar how much press the 38 studios debacle has gotten. So many people have commented on it to me. Something about the gross stupidity of our legislature ( picked up by national press) really captured people’s imagination. It has made Rhode Island look really dumb, not even corrupt as usual but just plain stupid. Shame on them all, again as usual. Sigh. Good luck or get out while you can….
I hope you feel better soon! I am a NyQuil/ DaQuil user myself.
I am always amazed by folks like Goner who have left Rhode Island but feel compelled to “keep an eye on things” and like to send letters-to-the-editor or post in blogs about how they “got out” and they pity people who stay in Rhode Island. It kind of reminds me of the ex-boyfriend who calls constantly to let you know that he’s doing fine without you. Sure, this place is a disaster but Iooked out the window this morning and was grateful to be a Rhode Islander. I don’t think we should ever stop working to right the ship, but life is too short to let all the negatives consume you.
Goner is bitter , obviously, lost a boat load on the house. All five of our kids left the state first for work elsewhere, we followed them and brought our biz with us. Both of us volunteered endlessly in RI to no avail, me filling out all my local disclosure for town govt service and doing all my open meetings law compliance but no one at the GA has to abide by the same rules? Why not? I watch – and comment – because I want the truth out there. Change is painful but people need to see how rigged the game is to get angry and invoke change. Commenting, then, is part of the process. 38 Studios was shameful. Its the truth whether you love RI or not….
Ted, sorry to hear that you are under the weather. However, this gives you some well-deserved time to rest and take a break.
I have no comments about specific topics but I do have some general observations: 1. We (RI citizens) get what we deserve because we don’t look beyond party allegiances to see what our elected officals are actually doing and vote accordingly. That may be so because we don’t take the time to learn about the issues and how the elected officials are dealing with them (or not).
2. RI suffers from a lack of transparency. This may be remediated somewhat by the new public records law if the governor signs it. 3. The legislators need term limits. 4. Some press/media give biased/preferential treatment to certain political figures, issues, etc. How can a citizenry be informed if the information isn’t presented to them in as unbiased s form as possible. No politican or issue should be above appropriate scrutiny. (Ted Nesi is exempt from this criticism, of course!)
Hope you feel better soon!
Questions that may have answers by next week’s Saturday Morning Post:
1) Will the trio of Woonsocket State Representatives responsible for the city losing control of it’s school system face both primary and general election challenges? Will both the Brien and Baldelli political dynasties end this Fall?
2) While still on the topic of political extinction, will the parade of Blackstone Valley DINO former mayors lining up behind Republican Brendan Doherty be enough to make Anthony Gemma realize any slim chance he had in a Democratc primary just marched into the Republican camp? Take a lesson from Curt Schilling, Anthony – just because you wish really, really hard, and put the family fortune into a crazy idea, doesn’t make it happen.
3) How many surprise “not running for reelection” announcements will there be by filing deadline? Bonus points for any that proclaim the reason is to spend more time with family! Double-bonus for those that tell us it just got too crazy for them.
4) Feel better Mr. Nesi!
How about the Providence Journal running an ad (see page B-3 of today’s paper) promoting a special subscription offer for us business people. But this ad also promotes the stock tables when in fact the Journal hasn’t published the stock tables in years? Backs up my theory that the ProJo is trying to run itself out of business!
Well I should hope if you were feeling better Ted that this missive from Scott MacKay would have made the Morning Post:
RI must get over the Schilling crash
http://wrnipoliticsblog.wordpress.com/2012/06/15/ri-must-get-over-the-schilling-crash/
Good read!
I don’t think Scott is in touch with the taxpayers on this one!!!!
If you turn enough violent ex-mates loose in order to save the RI government money what do you get?
Chaos, but who cares as long as the state is saving money. Citizens please enjoy the mayhem coming soon to your town. What, its already here?
