Hail (ice) At 95 Degrees?

Good Evening…

As a kid, I always wondered how junks of ice could fall out of the sky when temperatures are in the 90s. Ofcourse  we all know the air needs to be cold for ice to form. Severe thunderstorms are amazing and obviously dangerous. The severe thunderstorms Today were towering 50, ooo ft high into the atmosphere. Usually the taller the storm, the stronger it is.….so where is the cold air?…well it’s high above inthe atmosphere…., even on a hot summer day, the temperatures are below freezing at high altitudes. That’s how these severe storms can create hail stones on a hot day.  Some of the hail Today as large as golf balls !  the red arrows below are called updrafts…this rapidly rising air carries water drops to the icy cold regions at the top of the thunderstorm cloud where ice is formed. ….Tony Petrarca
