Vulnerable Dem pols enlisting Obama: will Cicilline be next?

A freshman U.S. House Democrat is rolling out an endorsement from President Obama to shore up the party base in the face of a tough primary challenge.

It sounds like it could be David Cicilline, but it’s actually Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, D-Florida. “When a Democratic member of Congress rolls out an endorsement from President Obama during a primary race, it’s usually a sign they’re sweating a little bit,” Politico’s Charlie Mahtesian writes.

There’s no indication Cicilline has asked for the president to get involved in his race against Anthony Gemma – his spokeswoman declined to comment on the record – but Obama’s Florida intervention is a reminder that the incumbent has plenty of cards to play if the Gemma rematch starts looking too close for comfort.

“Obama has delivered formal endorsements in a number of contested Democratic House primaries this year, often in majority-minority districts where his backing carries some punch,” Mahtesian writes, adding that the president has backed “highly vulnerable incumbents” including Pete Stark and John Conyers.
