Emma Watson reportedly postpones return to Brown U. (again)

Katie Nicholl reports for the Daily Mail:

The 22-year-old has postponed her return to Brown University in the US, where she is taking a literature course, until next year so that she can pursue a number of new film projects.

It is the latest twist in a long-running saga that began when, amid rumours that she was being bullied, Emma announced in March 2011 that she was deferring her course after spending 18 months at the university in Rhode Island.

She has spent the past year happily studying at Oxford.

Now it has been revealed that although she is hoping to return to Brown in January, it will be four months later than originally planned.

There is even speculation that she might not return at all.

Emma, you’re welcome to appear on Executive Suite once you make your triumphant return to Rhode Island.

Emma is one semester away from graduating, do you really think she would flat out quit a dream that she has had for nearly a decade now of getting a college degree? And it’s the smart thing to postpone because her first month at Brown would be spent traveling around the world promoting Perks and doing interviews that she wouldn’t have any time to even study for those classes and would be way behind everyone else. What difference does it make if she graduates in December or May?

I’m glad my college career wasn’t the subject of news reports (or the tabloid press). On the other hand, I’m not a famous film star and am swimming in college debt, so I guess it’s a wash.

She had more than one semester left, unless a form of special treatment applies to her? She did her freshman year, fall semester of sophomore year at brown, took ten months off, did ONE THIRD of a year at Oxford (she made an official comment about leaving her third term to film Bling Ring, but for her second, she has said nothing but was seen shopping in Paris during the middle of a week during term when she should have been studying)… so she’s done less than two years of university. At this rate it would take her a long time to graduate, but I hope she sticks to it.

    1. Chris says:

From what I understand, her grades were so well her last year in high school that she tested out of quite a few freshman classes at Brown. So technically the first day she stepped onto campus she was taking sophmore classes. She then spent 1 1/2 years at Brown and one full year (the third term at Oxford is merely a research term for papers so she didn’t have to be on campus or even go to a class so long as she got the work done). So with the 2 1/2 years at a physical college along with the classes she already recieved credit for with her prior grades and whatever independent studies she’s done, it’s extemely probably that she is just 4 months away from her Bachelor’s Degree.

      1. Michelle says:

Chris She only had three a levels and they were in English literature, geography and art. a quick google search would have told you that, there was no way she could have tested out of very many freshman classes, if she did any at all. I have to agree with others up here there is no way she is doing her final semester when she returns. She has only gone for a year and a half of school, so even if she tested out of some classes there is no way it was enough to get her out of two years worth. Like someone else said Worcester is not part of Browns study abroad program. Quick google search would have showed you that as well.

      2. Jessica says:

And with a quick google search you can find Emma Watson doing cocaine off a toilet seat. Neither of you know what Emma did or didn’t do involving her studies so quit trying be the smartest person in the room when both of you have the barest of facts.

      3. Auuranthea says:

Jessica, a legitimate newspaper in Britain mentioned Emma’s three A-levels so Michelle is simply relaying facts. And we DO know what Emma didn’t do regarding her studies because she keeps mentioning it through official outlets. In addition, it’s just a fact that Worchester isn’t apart of Brown’s study abroad program.

Quit trying to be the smartest person in the room because you can’t stand that people aren’t just working with the “barest of facts.”

It is strange how much fuzz Ms Watson always made about her education and now seems to care very little about that anymore – or is that so strange? Most students get their degree just to get a well-paid job, not for their academic brilliance or curiosity. And Emma Watson is far beyond these needs and desires, she can get more famous (and richer) mostly by being active as an actress. Perhaps the film industry should stop building up stars who receive unreasonable amounts of cash for mediocre acting. Anyway, to look at the bright side, there is as yet one Hogwarts alumna who now has earned a university degree: Bonnie Wright, B.A. – and she also did acting and modelling while studying for her degree. I really like that she took her studies seriously and finished her degree. She may not have been so much in the focus of attention as Emma, especially with HP, but I have the impression she is building up a more original profile than the other ex-Hogwartians, slowly but wisely.

  5. Lebuztki says:

Worcester is not even part of the study abroad program at Brown. She did not finish her time at Worcester when she left in March of this year. I don’t know how she can return to Brown with one term left. Jay sad what I was going to. He’s right.

Wow, a lot of anger over nothing really. The only question I have is what would there be to gain by Emma’s rep lying about her education if it would be proven false after her next term anyways? It wasn’t an anonymous source or the Daily Mail saying that, but a representative of Emma herself. Fanboys vs haters, the wars will never end. ;)

  8. Jules says:

    @me

Im not sensing any anger here at all. You are upset at the not so positive comments about this. Wouldnt you say Emma and her rep lied about returning to Brown this fall? When Jan 2013 arrives and she does not go wouldn’t that be a lie too?

  9. Jane says:

You can’t start a semester at Brown in May, as the school year ends in May!! Let’s face it: she ain’t ever coming back to Providence.

Jodie Foster got through Yale; Brooke Shields graduated from Princeton and Natalie Portman graduated from Harvard. They were more famous and the colleges were harder. Why couldn’t Watson hack Brown?
