No word on layoffs at Providence Journal, union chief says

October 9th, 2012 at 5:29 pm by under Nesi's Notes, On the Main Site

The leader of The Providence Journal’s largest union hadn’t heard anything as of late Tuesday afternoon about whether the company will order layoffs or take other action to deal with falling advertising revenue.

Providence Newspaper Guild President John Hill told WPRI.com he hadn’t been contacted by the company’s executives as of 5:15 p.m. Last week, Hill said Journal executives told him they’d disclose today how many employees they’re looking to lay off.

Asked if he still expected to receive word on Tuesday, Hill said: “I don’t expect anything one way or the other. I don’t know what to tell you.” Journal employees have been anxiously awaiting news, and Hill’s union has asked to discuss other concessions that could be made to avoid layoffs.

Doesnt surprise me. People’s life hang in the balance, typical Journal management. Trust me when I say when the cuts are over and done with there will more promotions for the executives just like in the 2009 lay-offs.

The layoffs probably won’t be announced today (Wednesday) either because it would taint the integrity of the employment forum that the ProJo is co-hosting this evening at RIC. Can you imagine the field day the media would have wih that paradox? Here’s a copy and paste from the ProJo website:

“In partnership with Rhode Island College and Leadership Rhode Island, The Journal has gathered top education, labor, business and government leaders who will explore the mismatch in the skills workers have and the kinds of jobs available here in the state.”

Here’s one of the comments posted to the ProJo’s website story promoting tonight’s employment forum that they are co-hosting

The Journal is getting ready to ax more of it’s employees so there will be less reporters Tweeting at this forum. Maybe the Journal can explain why they are sending people to the unemployment lines. What is sad for this state is that the paper that once was is becoming no longer all due to greed and profits of the Dallas Morning News and its head Robert Decherd. The Forum should be talking about the greed of CEO’s.

Belo has ruined an almost 200 year old newspaper – in less than 20 years! belo has a negative, destructive viewpoint on just about every area of business life – no kidding!
