Don’t Be Fooled by The Cone

The most common point of confusion during hurricanes seems to be the cone.  The cone simply represents where the CENTER of the storm may go.  Keep in mind, tropical storm force winds extend hundreds of miles away from the storm. Even if the center of the storm goes into Atlantic City (as the current track has it), we still get significant impacts with damaging winds, power outages, heavy rain, and storm surge.  How bad could the storm surge be? If the center goes into New Jersey the storm surge and coastal flooding would probably be moderate.  If the center tracks into central Long Island (which is still possible), coastal flooding could be severe with evacuations necessary.  We need more time to get specific details on the extent of the coastal flooding. -Pete Mangione
