Emergencies mean double-time-and-a-half for RI prison guards
By Tim White
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Correctional officers at the state prison immediately begin collecting double-time-and-a-half pay when the governor declares an emergency due to a 2006 arbitration award, according to union contracts and a ruling obtained by Target 12.

What a joke. Union thugs bankrupting the state then whining about it afterwards.
Sell the prisons and outsource corrections. It’s working well in other states. OH for example.
I agree, vital employees in hospitals don’t get that compensation why should a guard in a prison.
I work at a hospital, wish i had the same deal with the state….
This just shows that when we were living high off the hog the unions asked for anything that would put as much money in their pockets and it seems that the people that were responsible for negotiating with the unions seemingly let most requests go through into the contracts. I work in a hospital and during emergency weather situations I get my normal pay and if i have to stay beyond my regular shift THEN I get time and a half not just because I showed up. The only way I would get time and a half is if I was called in on a day off. Also if I cannot get to work then I have to use my vacation time in order to get paid. I think that it’s high time that these state contracts are looked at with a fine tooth comb and all the fluff that are in them should be removed the next time they have to negotiate. I do not know one person who has such a sweet deal other than STATE WORKERS.
